What Makes an Eye “Hard to Fit”?

“Hard to fit” doesn’t mean your eyes are a problem; it just means they need a little extra attention. Some eye shapes, conditions, or past surgeries make standard soft lenses a poor match. That’s where specialty contact lenses come in.

You may benefit from a specialty lens if you have:

  • Keratoconus—a condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge outward.
  • Irregular corneas from injury, scarring, or past surgeries like LASIK or RK.
  • Severe dry eye where soft lenses worsen irritation.
  • High astigmatism—beyond what traditional toric lenses can correct.
  • Post-surgical eyes, including corneal transplants, grafts, or scarring.
  • Soft lens intolerance—if regular contacts feel dry, move too much, or don’t give clear vision.

The Specialty Lenses We Offer

At North Coast Eye Care, we match the lens to the patient, not the other way around. Using advanced diagnostic tools, we’ll determine the best specialty lens option for your condition, comfort level, and vision needs.

Scleral Lenses

These large, dome-shaped lenses vault over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera). They’re a game-changer for patients with keratoconus, dry eye, or irregular corneas, because they create a fluid-filled cushion that protects the eye and improves vision.

Great for: keratoconus, corneal scarring, post-surgical corneas, and chronic dry eye

Hybrid Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine the crisp optics of a rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens with the comfort of a soft lens. They have a rigid center for sharp vision and a soft outer skirt to improve comfort and stability.

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses

These small, highly breathable lenses offer excellent visual clarity and are fully customized to your eye. While they can take some getting used to, many patients with high prescriptions or corneal conditions find them to be the most effective solution.

Fitting Specialty Lens at North Coast Eye Care

Getting fitted for specialty contact lenses is a little different from a routine eye exam. We take extra steps to ensure your lenses not only improve your vision but also feel great and support your long-term eye health. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Advanced measurements: Using tools like corneal topography and OCT imaging, we map the surface of your eye with extreme precision.

  1. Tear film and corneal evaluation: We assess how your eye surface behaves with lenses in mind.

  1. Trial lens fitting: We’ll place different lenses on your eyes during the fitting to test comfort, clarity, and stability.

  1. Wear and feedback period: You’ll take trial lenses home to see how they perform in real life (not just in the exam chair).

  1. Follow-up adjustments: We’ll bring you back to fine-tune your prescription, fit, or material.

  1. Ongoing support: We stay in touch for long-term success — not just a one-and-done visit.
