What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

Whether it’s your first time in or your annual checkup, our comprehensive eye exams provide a complete picture of your vision and eye health. We don’t rush the process because the more we understand your eyes, the better we can protect them. Here’s what a typical exam includes:

  • Vision Testing: We check your prescription and visual acuity (how clearly you see).
  • Eye Health Evaluation: Using advanced tech like Cirrus OCT and Optos® retinal imaging, we assess the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of your eye.
  • Pressure Check: A quick, painless test to measure your intraocular pressure (important for detecting glaucoma).
  • Diagnostic Imaging: If needed, we use RetEval ERG and anterior segment imaging for a deeper look at your eye’s structure and function.
  • Personalized Recommendations: Your eye doctor will review the results with you, answer any questions you may have, and walk you through any recommended next steps.

Eye Exams for Every Age

No two pairs of eyes are the same, especially when comparing a first-grader to a grandparent. At North Coast Eye Care, we don’t just see all ages; we actually understand what different eyes need at every stage of life.

Kids & Teens

From the moment they start reading to the day they get their driver’s license, kids rely on clear vision to keep up in the classroom, on the field, and online. We offer pediatric-friendly exams that check for common childhood conditions like myopia, amblyopia (lazy eye), and tracking issues.

Adults

Whether you’re managing screen fatigue, updating your contact lens prescription, or monitoring your eye health, annual exams help you stay ahead of potential problems before they affect your daily life. Our optometrists take the time to understand your lifestyle and tailor recommendations to your needs.

Seniors

Vision changes are a natural part of aging, but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. We screen for age-related conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts, and we provide clear next steps if anything shows up.

How Often Should I Get an Exam?

The short answer? Once a year. The long answer? It depends, but annual exams are the gold standard for keeping your eyes healthy and your vision sharp.

  • Children: First eye exam by age 1, then again before starting school. After that, once a year, especially if they wear glasses or struggle with reading or focus.
  • Adults (18–60): Once a year, even if you think your vision is “fine.”
  • Seniors (60+): Annual exams are essential to monitor for age-related eye diseases.

If you have diabetes or a family history of eye disease, you may need exams more often, and we’ll let you know what schedule’s best for you.
