Why Kids Need More Than a School Vision Screening

A quick vision check at school might catch basic issues, like whether your child can read the board, but it won’t catch everything. In fact, many common pediatric vision problems go undetected, and that’s where we come in.

We provide full-scope eye exams that look at how your child’s eyes work together, how well they focus and track, and whether there are any early signs of conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) or eye turn (strabismus).

If your child struggles with reading, has frequent headaches, avoids close-up work, or seems easily distracted, their eyes may be working harder than they should.

North Coast Eye Care’s Pediatric Eye Exams

Every pediatric eye exam we conduct gives us a complete picture of your child’s vision, eye development, and overall eye health. Here are a few of the things we check for:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia): Blurry distance vision, especially common in school-aged kids.
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia): Trouble with close-up tasks like reading or writing.
  • Astigmatism: Blurred or distorted vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea.
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye): A condition where one eye develops more slowly than the other.
  • Strabismus (eye turn): When one or both eyes drift in or out, especially when tired or focusing.
  • Binocular vision & tracking problems: How well the eyes work together and follow movement.
  • Eye health red flags: Signs of infection, inflammation, or structural concerns.

We use gentle, kid-friendly tests and advanced imaging tools to ensure that nothing is missed. Our eye doctors explain everything in plain English so you’re never left guessing.

Exams Tailored to Every Age

Kids’ eyes grow fast, and so do their needs. Our eye exams aren’t one-size-fits-all. Whether we’re checking for early eye development in toddlers or helping a teen manage digital eye strain, we tailor our approach to meet your child where they are.

Babies & Toddlers

We recommend that a child have their first eye exam by age 1, even if everything appears fine. At this stage, we look for early signs of eye turn, lazy eye, or developmental delays.

School-Aged Kids

Between ages 5 and 12, vision problems can start to show up in subtle ways, like struggling to focus, skipping lines while reading, or falling behind in class. Annual eye exams help us stay ahead of issues like myopia, eye-teaming challenges, or visual processing problems.

Teens & Tweens

As kids grow, so do their screen time habits, and that can take a toll. We help teens manage eye fatigue, update prescriptions for glasses or contacts, and monitor for rapid myopia progression.
